I am usually colored orange

My mesh is white

I am strung extremely tight,

People often throw rubber at me

And hit me often

When I’m hit I scream

And I’m known for being a best friend

But to another a worst nightmare

I’m the closest thing to achieving a goal without scoring

What or who could I be?
