What the doctors did was great and it's a step for science in the right direction. However these types of experiments can cause long or short term damage if the person does survive and if they don't, possibly die. Now one might argue and say that how will we know if something works to cure a disease if we can't test it on humans? Well scientists nowadays are working to clone human beings and this might open a whole new door for testings and experiments without endangering real life.
